The Biochar Initiative
We've spent two years targeting the major sources of pollution and agricultural runoff entering Paw Paw Lake. Now, the Foundation is shifting its focus to what's already contaminated Paw Paw Lake—and removing it .
The Biochar Initiative is a multi-year effort to remove unwanted materials from the lake and restore it’s natural balance.
Biochar is an all-natural, carbon-based material that filters and binds contaminants without the use of chemicals.
By deploying Biochar strategically along the shoreline, it works to capturing biological contaminants and impurities that fuel algae growth and degrade clarity.
This will improve water quality across Paw Paw Lake and have a significant, lasting impact within just a few short years.
The Biochar Initiative furthers PPLF's mission to
Save the Lake
by restoring balance to the ecosystem and improving water quality for generations to come.
Q & A
What is Biochar?
Biochar is a charcoal-like product that is used in water treatment to filter pollutants.
PPLF will use TimberChar – the only EPA-approved, organically certified biochar filtration system built specifically for this purpose.
What Will
Biochar Do
For PPLF?
-
Treat phosphorus and nitrogen runoff
-
Reduce the frequency and severity of algae blooms
-
Improve water clarity
Most Importantly...
How Can We All Help?!
As the TimberCharTM product must be deployed through the entire shoreline, it is imperative the entire lake community take part in making this initiative successful.
